All The Bright Places - A Review By Jen

Review may contain spoilers

What is it about?
Girl meets boy on the school bell tower. Both fall for each other, is life now worth living?

Who’s it for?
Teenagers/Young Adults

Genre?

Teenage angst.

Is it any good?
Violet is grieving for her sister, and she blames herself for her death. Hence she does not want to live. Theodore on the other hand, suffers with depression and insomnia. His family life is a bit messy. The narrative is split between the two, in first person perspectives. This gives is a deeper insight into these two highly emotional teenagers. Both meet on top of the bell tower and save each other (for the time being.)

Theodore coerces Violet into school project: Wanderings. Basically wandering around places near where they live and leaving a part of themselves behind. He makes her face her fear of travelling by car, since her sister died in a car accident. And love blossoms between the two.

However interspersed with this is the sub plot of Theo’s family: his dad has left the family home for another woman, who has a child, which may or may not be his brother. He sees a school counsellor, but he lies to him. I understand why, because the truth would actually hurt him so much. But I wanted to know more about him, because I think it would help others going through similar situations. In saying that: both characters are beautifully written.

Was the end satisfactory?
*SPOILER ALERT* SPOILER ALERT* SPOILER ALERT* SPOILER ALERT*
In a way no, because Theo succeeds in ending his life and in a way yes, because he throughout the book has given Violet reasons to live.

Would I recommend the book?
Yes, I would especially to those suffering with grief and depression.
